Tom was vice-president for external relations at Freeport Indonesia for eight years and directed all community affairs, local and provincial government relations and security programs for the most extensive single-site sustainable development program in the world.
He worked in the United States Embassy in Jakarta for seven years as executive manager and security assistance officer. Tom has also worked with many extractive companies to ensure their policies and training are inline with Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. He holds a master’s degree in international studies from the University of North Carolina and was formerly executive director for Pacific Strategies and Assessment, a political and security-risk consultancy.
